What to expect
Step back in time with a unique donkey trek tour through the enchanting village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, nestled in the Abruzzo mountains.
This family-friendly trek invites you to discover one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, where history and landscape blend in perfect harmony. As you journey along ancient mule tracks, through narrow streets, stone arches, and sunlit squares, you’ll experience the village much as travelers did centuries ago, at a gentle, unhurried pace.
Your adventure begins outside the village and will continue towards the heart of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, a settlement shaped by centuries of history and crowned by the recently restored medieval tower.
Accompanied by friendly donkeys, you’ll follow paths that reveal the village’s medieval layout, with its concentric circles of houses and winding alleys. Along the way, your guide shares stories of the town’s origins as Sextantia, its strategic role in trade and transhumance, and its heyday under the Medici family, when local wool was prized in Florence. You’ll pass tower houses, covered walkways, all testaments to the village’s fortified past.
As you trek, soak in sweeping views of the surrounding mountains of the Gran Sasso National Park.
The donkeys add a playful, authentic touch to this activity, making the experience especially memorable for children and families. You’ll learn how to guide your donkey along the route, while children have the opportunity to ride.
