About this experience

The Private Tour to the Sorolla Museum is an exclusive and deeply rewarding private exploration of one of Madrid's most beloved and distinctive cultural institutions — the Casa-Museo Sorolla, the former home and studio of the great Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla, preserved as he left it and housing the world's finest collection of his luminous Mediterranean paintings — experienced with a dedicated expert Amigo Tours guide for your group alone. Sorolla — often called the master of light for his extraordinary ability to capture the quality and movement of Mediterranean sunlight on water, skin, white fabric, and the coastal landscapes of Valencia and Andalusia — is one of the most beloved and internationally celebrated Spanish painters of the late 19th and early 20th century, and his home in Madrid's Almagro neighbourhood provides the most intimate and contextually rich possible encounter with his life, working methods, and artistic achievement.

The museum's three interconnected gardens — designed by Sorolla himself and reflecting the Andalusian, Castilian, and Levantine garden traditions he loved — provide a magical outdoor context for the studio and residential spaces within, the whole complex creating an atmosphere of extraordinary artistic intimacy that makes the Sorolla Museum one of the most personally affecting and genuinely moving museum experiences in Madrid. The guide's expert knowledge of Sorolla's life, techniques, and artistic development brings the collection to life with a depth and biographical richness that transforms the visit into a genuine encounter with one of Spain's most luminous artistic personalities.

What to expect

The Sorolla Museum has works by the artist. It used to be his home and, in addition to becoming a charming palace, architecturally speaking, it houses masterpieces by this great artist from the Levant. Within the collection we can find several works, classified in different categories. It is one of the most beautiful and homely museums in Madrid, as well as one of the best preserved houses in Europe. The building was converted into a museum after the death of his widow. Designed by Enrique María Repullés, it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1962. The main rooms are still furnished as they were during the artist's lifetime, including Sorolla's large, well-lit studio, where the walls are filled with his canvases. Other rooms are used as galleries to show Sorolla's paintings, while the rooms above are a gallery for special exhibitions. In 2014 an exhibition of David Palacín's photographs of the Sorolla ballet produced by the National Spanish Dance Company was held.
