About this experience
The Private Tour to El Escorial and Valle de los Caídos is an exclusive and historically profound private exploration of two of the most significant and architecturally extraordinary monuments of the Spanish state — the austere Habsburg royal monastery palace of El Escorial and the monumental Civil War memorial of Valle de los Caídos — experienced with a dedicated expert Amigo Tours guide for your group alone. El Escorial — the vast granite complex built by Philip II between 1563 and 1584 as the spiritual, political, and intellectual heart of the Spanish empire at its greatest extent — is one of the most ambitious and historically significant buildings in the history of European architecture, housing the royal pantheon where the Spanish kings are buried, a magnificent library of extraordinary historical value, and a royal art collection of the highest quality.
The Valle de los Caídos — the Civil War memorial built between 1940 and 1958 under the Franco regime, its enormous stone basilica carved into a granite mountain and topped by a 150-metre cross visible across the Guadarrama landscape — is one of the most historically contested and architecturally extraordinary monuments in Spain, its complex political legacy and remarkable physical character receiving the guide's most careful and historically informed contextualisation in an experience that confronts the darkest and most complex chapter of 20th-century Spanish history with appropriate depth and historical sensitivity.

What to expect
Visit two of the most important monuments located just outside Madrid. You will depart at midday from our meeting point in central Madrid and first visit the Monastery of El Escorial. There, you will explore the palace that served as the residence of the Spanish Royal Family, the basilica, which is the burial place of the Kings of Spain, and the monastery, founded by monks of the Order of Saint Jerome and currently occupied by friars of the Order of Saint Augustine. This monastery is one of the most outstanding examples of Renaissance architecture in Spain and Europe.
You will also have the opportunity to visit the Friars’ Garden, which represents King Philip II’s vision of gardening, combining visual beauty with the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. This tour offers the chance to see the interior of both monuments and learn about their history with a professional guide.
Afterwards, we will visit the Valley of the Fallen, a complex built between 1940 and 1958 as a memorial to those who died. It is home to the largest cross in the Christian world, as well as the tomb of José Antonio Primo de Rivera. You won’t forget the history behind this impressive monument.
