The cathedral was built on the site of the Aljama mosque, which was destroyed when the city was reconquered by the Christians. The enormous interior of the cathedral, with a central nave and four central aisles, is decorated with luxury, but at the same time, it retains a sense of simplicity and restraint in the decoration. This cathedral is home to the largest and richest altarpiece in the world. Be sure to see the keys presented by the Jewish and Moorish communities when handing over the city. The walls of the cathedral of Seville are lined with chapels dedicated to the saints and other important figures in the history of the Spanish cathedral. Also noteworthy is the magnificent and invaluable collection of stained glass.
