Enter the gallery through its dramatic subterranean entrance and ascend through floors of carefully curated galleries. Works are displayed thematically and chronologically, tracing the history of Spanish royal patronage from the Habsburg dynasty through to the Bourbons. Key works include Caravaggio's Salome with the Head of John the Baptist, equestrian portraits by Velázquez, and tapestries woven to designs by Rubens. Floor-to-ceiling windows on the upper levels frame views of the Royal Palace and the Almudena Cathedral.

Things to note
- As a recently opened institution, time-slot booking in advance is essential — queues can be long without a reservation
- The gallery is adjacent to the Royal Palace — a combined visit to both is highly recommended
- Photography regulations should be confirmed on arrival as policies may still be evolving for the new institution
- Allow at least 1.5–2 hours for a thorough visit across the gallery's multiple floors
- The gallery has a café and bookshop on the lower level — excellent resources for further exploration of the collection
