What to expect
The East Side Gallery is located between Berlin East Railway Station and Oberbaum Bridge. It is the longest section of the Berlin Wall in Berlin. Once a symbol of the Cold War, the carrier of the painting is the Berlin Wall. During the separation of East and West Berlin, colorful decorative painters and artists used the wall instead of paper to paint on the west side of the Berlin Wall. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, some spray painting artists painted on the east side of the long-reserved section of the wall, forming today's East Side Gallery. Between 1989 and 1990, 180 artists from 21 countries created paintings of different themes on the 1,316-meter-long Berlin Wall. Among the works are DimitriVrubel's "Brother Kiss", GuntherSchaefer's "Motherland", GerhardLahr's "Berlin-New York" and so on. In 1991, this section of the Berlin Wall was listed as a protected building. In addition, there is a sandy beach in the part of the East Side Gallery close to the Berlin East Railway Station. There are small bars and restaurants around, and you can rest here in summer.
