What to expect
The Berlinische Galerie's collection encompasses both local and international art, featuring approximately 5,400 artworks including paintings, sculptures, installations, and multimedia pieces. Additionally, it preserves around 73,000 photographic works. The permanent exhibition occupies over 1,000 square meters, displaying about 250 works such as paintings, prints, photographs, architectural designs, and artist archives. These pieces vividly illustrate social transformations and artistic evolution across historical periods—from the German Empire, Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, postwar reconstruction, to the Cold War division.
The Berlinische Galerie also regularly hosts special exhibitions covering diverse art forms and creative styles. For instance, it presented a retrospective of Akinbode Akinbiyi to celebrate his winning the 2024 Hannah-Höch-Preis, as well as Özlem Altın's exhibition *Prism*, which explored profound reflections on life cycles and bodily transmission. Another exhibition, *Closer to Nature*, showcased innovative architectural designs using natural materials like mushrooms, wood, and clay.
Dedicated to researching and exhibiting Berlin's art and cultural history, the gallery offers visitors an in-depth understanding of the city's artistic development. Beyond being a space for displaying art, it serves as a platform for cultural exchange, where visitors and scholars from around the world gather to explore and share diverse cultures and artistic perspectives, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and integration.
