What to expect
This is a 1,000-year-old castle and prison, west of the university town in the direction of Oxford train station. The castle is a Roman-era building in the 11th century, with structures such as a moat. This is a strategic fortress. Later, the military castle was used as a prison by the British. Now the Oxfordshire government has listed the castle as a first-class protected building. After renovation, it has been transformed into a sightseeing spot, OxfordCastleUnlocked. It is open for tourists to visit the interior of the castle for a fee. The guided tours provided by the castle allow you to look back on the prison life here, and climb the towers to enjoy the view of the city, which is very pleasant.
