What to expect
The Ice Sea is the second largest glacier in the Alps, about 14 kilometers long, 1800 meters wide and 400 meters deep. The moving speed of the edge of the glacier is 45 m/year, and the central part is 90 m/year. Starting from the Aiguille du Midi, via the Grand Bzlcon Nord trail, you can walk to the ice sea. The trail uphill from Chamonix starts near the toboggan run in summer. Crossing glaciers and their crevasses requires the right equipment and an experienced guide.
