What to expect
The Château de Vincennes is located in the city of Vincennes in eastern Paris. It stands out with its 52-meter-high keep, making it not only the tallest military fortress in Europe but also the largest surviving royal castle in France by area. Built between 1337 and 1373, it evolved from a simple manor house and underwent expansions over five centuries to reach its final scale. The castle is surrounded by walls with three gates and six 42-meter-high towers. Inside the walls, there is a group of towers, civilian residences, military facilities, administrative offices, and a small chapel. During the Middle Ages, it could accommodate tens of thousands of people.
