What to expect
The Château de Fernay-Voltaire is close to Switzerland, bordering the Hautes Jura Regional Nature Park to the west and Geneva to the south. The thinker Voltaire spent the last twenty years of his life in this castle. Voltaire's years in Fernay were a continuation of his struggle against feudal despotism and religious oppression, and a testament to the blossoming of Enlightenment thought in Europe. 1758 to 1766 Voltaire had the castle built, and he was the architect and planner of the castle, where he fought head-on against narrow-mindedness, while continuing his literary work, turning the castle into the nerve center of the European Enlightenment. his literary work, turning the castle into the nerve center of the European Enlightenment. In Fernay, Voltaire not only transformed his castle, but also built a theater and a church, developed agriculture and crafts, and made this small, obscure village prosperous. Here he promoted religious tolerance and social justice, which he advocated throughout his life, and was eager to help those who suffered from injustice.
