What to expect
The Pierrefonds Castle is located southeast of Compiègne in northern France. The castle was built by Louis d'Orleans, son of Charles V, in the late 14th century. It was demolished by Louis VIII in the 17th century and completely restored by architect Viollet-le-Duc for Napoleon III in the late 19th century. The Pierrefonds Castle is magnificent and majestic. As the castle is built on a hill, it overlooks the town on three sides. The castle has a defensive tower in each corner and the center of each side, and it is also a solid military fortress.
