In its historic building in the center of Frankfurt, the Frankfurter Kunstverein is a central place for cultural encounters and innovations.
Our current exhibition: 'Anatomy of Fragility - Body Images in Art and Science'
The way people look at, perceive, and represent bodies is always changing. Art and science have always used body images to tell stories about being human. As the ages changed, new body images and interpretations kept popping up. The exhibition brings together objects from different fields and times: from the idealized body images of archaic Greek art to religious votive offerings as requests for healing and spectacular anatomical wax figures from the 18th century. to the latest medical research images, where we virtually travel through a beating heart. The show juxtaposes all this with the works of contemporary artists who express a changed sense of physicality, its reinterpretation, and the call for a new image of humanity.
The exhibition reflects the programmatic orientation of the Frankfurter Kunstverein, where contemporary art and the sciences are explored as equal forms of expression for the human thirst for knowledge and the search for meaning. We invited the following to collaborate: Goethe University Frankfurt – represented by artifacts from the Classical Collection and the Sculpture Hall, as well as from the moulage collection of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Allergology; University Medicine –, the University of Bologna – represented by the anatomical wax figures from the “Luigi Cattaneo” collections and the Palazzo Poggi Museum –, Justus Liebig University Giessen – represented by anatomical votives from the Ludwig Stieda Collection from the Classical Collection of the Chair of Classical Archaeology – as well as the private collection of Hans and Benedikt Hipp, who also contributed anatomical votives.
