Guests typically begin the Maokong Gondola experience at Taipei Zoo Station — the lower terminus located adjacent to Taipei Zoo in the Wenshan District — which is directly accessible via the Wenhu Line of the Taipei Metro. Tickets are purchased at the station using an EasyCard or cash, with separate queues available for standard cabins and the popular Crystal Cabin upgrade. During busy weekend periods, wait times for Crystal Cabins can extend to 30 minutes or more, while standard cabins typically board with minimal delay. Once boarded, the gondola departs smoothly and begins its gradual ascent through the suburban neighbourhoods at the city's southern fringe before transitioning almost immediately into dense subtropical forest — a transition that feels remarkably abrupt and immersive given how close the gondola's lower station is to the heart of the city.

The journey upward passes through the Taipei Zoo South station — an optional stop for guests visiting the zoo's lower sections — before continuing to the mid-route Zhinan Temple station, where guests wishing to explore the expansive hillside Taoist temple complex can disembark and reboard a later cabin at no additional fare cost. The temple sits on a dramatic hillside setting with its own sweeping views and is well worth a 30 to 45-minute detour for guests with an interest in Taiwanese religious architecture and culture. From Zhinan Temple, the final leg of the ascent to Maokong station delivers the most dramatic scenery of the entire journey — the forest canopy thickening around the cable as the city basin spreads increasingly wide below, particularly photogenic in the late afternoon golden light or after dark when Taipei's illuminated skyline fills the horizon.

At Maokong station, guests emerge onto a hillside plateau where a network of walking paths, viewpoint terraces, and traditional teahouses fans out across the ridge among the tea gardens. Most visitors settle into one of the many open-sided teahouses for a pot of locally grown Tieguanyin or Four Seasons oolong tea, accompanied by light Taiwanese snacks, before exploring the surrounding trails and viewpoints at a relaxed pace. The atmosphere at Maokong is unhurried and deeply local — particularly on weekday evenings when Taipei residents escape the city heat for a quiet tea session above the lights of the metropolis below. The return gondola journey back to Taipei Zoo station completes the experience, with most guests allowing between 3 and 5 hours in total for a comfortable visit that includes travel time, a teahouse stop, and a brief exploration of the summit area.

Things to note

• No age or height restrictions apply. The Crystal Cabin glass floor may not be suitable for guests with a fear of heights or severe vertigo conditions.
• The gondola is busiest on weekends and public holidays. Queues for Crystal Cabins can be long during peak periods — early arrival or weekday visits are recommen
• The gondola may suspend operations during typhoons, heavy rain, strong winds, or lightning alerts. Always check operational status before visiting during Taiwan
