What to expect
Man-made caves were discovered on a farm called Ægissíða, near the town Hella on the South coast of Iceland. The Caves of Hella offer daily guided tours of five of these caves on a one hour tour led by a local Icelandic guide.
During the tour, you will hear fascinating stories about the caves and the mysteries surrounding them, as their origins remain unknown. Believed to be Iceland´s oldest still-standing archaeological site, the caves feature wall carvings, ancient structures, and an atmosphere filled with intrigue.
The questions yet to be answered include:
· Are the caves the handiwork of the Celts?
· Were the caves a place of ancient worship?
· When were they made, and for what purpose?

The caves are located by the town of Hella, right next to Route 1 (the Ring Road), approximately a one-hour drive from Reykjavík. Free parking is available in a large parking lot shared with the American School Bus Café. Add this unique stop to your South Coast road trip!
