What to expect
Begin with pickup from Reykjavík and travel to Vellir Farm near Hveragerði, a hot spring town in South Iceland. Meet your guide, receive your riding gear, and set off on a 1.5 to 2-hour horseback ride through open meadows, lava fields, and volcanic scenery.
Ride a sturdy Icelandic horse and experience the famous tölt, a smooth gait unique to the breed. The ride is suitable for different experience levels, making it a memorable way to connect with Iceland’s equestrian heritage.
After the ride, enjoy a light lunch of soup and fresh bread at a hotel before continuing into the mountains for the hiking part of the day.
Follow your guide on a scenic hike into Reykjadalur Valley, one of South Iceland’s most atmospheric geothermal areas. The trail is approximately 5 kilometers and includes a steep climb at the beginning before opening into a dramatic landscape of steam vents, boiling mud pools, green hills, and mountain views.
Along the way, see Djúpagilsfoss waterfall and take in panoramic views toward the coastline and the Westman Islands on clear days. The highlight of the hike is the warm natural river, where geothermal water mixes with cold mountain streams to create a comfortable bathing temperature.
