What to expect
Begin your day by boarding a traditional Icelandic boat called Old Skúli from the picturesque old harbor in downtown Reykjavik. Set sail and enjoy views of Reykjavik and Mount Esja as you make the 15-minute journey to the puffin-watching area. Keep a lookout for whales, seals, and other seabirds along the way.
The small islands around Reykjavik are a puffin paradise, hosting around 30,000 nesting puffins who come back from their solitary lives at sea to raise their chicks. Their favorite place to nest is amongst the rugged cliffs of the island, meaning that most puffin tours have to keep their distance. However, Old Skúli has been specially designed to get you as close to these adorable little birds as possible, maximizing your puffin-watching experience. The boat’s engine will be turned off, so you don’t interfere with the birds.
One of the knowledgeable local guides will tell you all about the incredible lives that puffins live and point out any other species of birds that you see. Make sure that you bring a camera because the photos of the cute little puffins and their chicks are amazing!
In the afternoon, begin the tour at Thingvellir National Park, a historic area that is located on an active volcano. There, enjoy breathtaking views and plant your feet on the ground where ancient systems of law were once proclaimed.
Next, visit Geysir, sometimes known as The Great Geysir, a geothermally active area in southwestern Iceland. There, you will have a chance to view Strokkur, a hot spring that erupts boiling water 25 meters into the air every 8 to 10 minutes. Admire the beautiful and otherworldly area, which is full of sulfurous mud pots, steam vents, cold and hot springs and water streams.
Also, visit Iceland's most popular waterfall, the spectacular Gullfoss, which translates to "Golden Falls." Take in the beautiful scenery and don't forget to take a great photo to remember your wonderful afternoon.
Finally, visit Kerid crater lake, which is 3000 years old and 55 meters deep, and is surrounded by red rocks and flora.
