What to expect
Trek the legendary Laugavegur Trail - ranked by National Geographic among the world's 20 best hikes - on a 4-day guided adventure through Iceland's remote Highlands. Starting with pickup from Reykjavík, Hella, or Selfoss, you'll travel by highland bus to Landmannalaugar, where steaming hot springs and rhyolite mountains painted red, green, and gold mark the start of your 55 km (34 mi) journey to Þórsmörk.
Over four days, you'll cross some of Iceland's most dramatic landscapes: the obsidian fields of Hrafntinnusker, the serene waters of Álftavatn, volcanic black-sand deserts near Emstrur, and finally the birch forests of Þórsmörk, cradled beneath Eyjafjallajökull glacier.
Choose the accommodation that suits you: cozy mountain huts (heated, with bunks and shared facilities) or camping for a closer connection to the wild. Either way, your expert guide coordinates meals, navigation, and logistics so you can focus on the trail. Your luggage is transported between sites, meaning you only carry a daypack. Small-group sizes keep the experience personal, and all pickups are from central Reykjavík, Hella, or Selfoss. This is Iceland's most iconic trek, done the right way.
Your trek begins in Landmannalaugar, where steaming hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and colourful rhyolite mountains set the tone for the days ahead. As you follow the “Hot Spring Route,” the landscape transforms constantly. We will cross black‑sand deserts, wander through vast obsidian fields, and traverse rolling hills shaped by centuries of volcanic activity.
We continue toward Álftavatn, a tranquil highland lake surrounded by sweeping mountain views, before moving deeper into Iceland’s wilderness. Each day brings new terrain: geothermal valleys, moss‑covered lava fields, glacial rivers, and panoramic ridgelines with views stretching across the Highlands.
The trail concludes in Þórsmörk, a sheltered oasis of birch forests and winding rivers, nestled beneath the mighty Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. It’s the perfect finale - green, peaceful, and dramatically different from where your journey began.
Throughout the trek, you’ll camp in tents at designated highland campsites, or you can select the Hut option, to stay in simple but equipped Mountain Huts. Your main luggage is transported between campsites or huts, allowing you to hike comfortably with only a daypack. Expert guides lead the way, ensuring safety, sharing information, and pointing out hidden gems.
This 4‑day experience blends natural beauty, movement, and the thrill of exploring Iceland’s most iconic long‑distance trail. It’s an unforgettable journey.
