What to expect
Begin your journey with a moderate 3-kilometer hike across a dramatic lava field, guided by expert naturalists who bring Iceland's geological story to life. The trail leads to Base Camp, a cozy mountain refuge where you gear up with helmets and harnesses before beginning the main event.
Board a custom-built cable lift — the only one of its kind in the world, adapted from industrial window-cleaning technology — and descend 120 meters through the funnel-shaped opening into the earth. The 7-minute descent is an experience in itself.
On the chamber floor, you have 30 minutes to explore freely. The walls glow with minerals in shades of deep red, purple, green, ochre, and white — a record of millions of years of geological activity. Expert guides accompany you at all times, answering questions and sharing facts about the microbial life discovered here, which has offered scientists clues about how life on Earth — and potentially other planets — may have evolved.
After ascending, a hearty bowl of traditional Icelandic lamb soup (or a vegetarian and vegan option) awaits at Base Camp, along with hot drinks and the warmth of good company.
