What to Expect?
Just arrived in Porto and want to discover the city’s most important sights while also exploring hidden streets and local life?
This walking tour offers the perfect introduction to Porto. Together we explore the historic center in a small group while combining famous landmarks with hidden corners that most visitors miss.
Whether you have only been in Porto for a few hours and want to get oriented, or you already know the city a little but want to learn more about its history and culture, this tour gives you 3.5 hours full of stories, tips, local insights, and fun.
You will discover Porto through a mix of must-see landmarks, charming alleys, viewpoints, and authentic neighborhoods. Along the way, I will share stories about Porto’s history, Portuguese culture, and everyday life in the city.
Part 1 [Introductory information, tips for going out and top attractions in the upper city center]
We will start the tour at the town hall of the city of Porto at the monument to the poet Almeida-Garret, where initial introductory information about the city and country will be given.
We continue through winding streets, past one of the most beautiful bookstores in Europe, the center of the university, to one of the best viewing points in Porto, with a view of the Baixa and Gaia. This first part is supported with lots of tips on restaurants, bars and cafés where you can get typical Portuguese food and drink (and at prices that are not overpriced) as well as anecdotes about the district and the places.
Part 2 [City tour in the Baixa, the riverside districts and strolling along the Douro River]
From the upper city we slowly walk downhill through the historic Baixa district, heading towards the Douro River.
As we move away from the busiest tourist streets, you will discover hidden places and quiet corners that reveal another side of Porto.
At the river we take time to enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the city, with the famous port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite bank.
Here we explore some of the oldest parts of Porto, full of history and atmosphere.
Depending on the day and group interest, the tour will finish either in the lively Ribeira riverfront district or in the historic neighborhood below Porto Cathedral, one of the oldest and most authentic areas of the city.
