What to expect
Day 1: Lisbon, Tomar, and the Schist Villages of Lousã
Leave Lisbon behind and travel north into the historic heart of Portugal. The first stop is the enchanting town of Tomar, once the headquarters of the legendary Knights Templar in Portugal. Wander through its charming historic center and discover the rich heritage that made this town one of the country's most important medieval strongholds.
From Tomar, continue into the mountains of central Portugal and the famous Schist Villages. Hidden among forests and valleys, these traditional stone-built communities preserve a way of life that has almost disappeared elsewhere in Europe. Explore narrow lanes, ancient houses, and stunning viewpoints before arriving in Lousã, a picturesque mountain town surrounded by forests and rolling hills. Overnight in Lousã.
Day 2: Serra da Estrela, Seia, and Loriga
After breakfast, journey into the magnificent Serra da Estrela, Portugal’s highest mountain range and one of the country's most spectacular natural landscapes. This protected region is renowned for its dramatic scenery, glacial valleys, granite peaks, and traditional mountain culture.
Visit the charming town of Seia, one of the gateways to the mountain, before continuing through some of the most beautiful roads in Portugal. Stop in the mountain village of Loriga, often called the "Swiss Village of Portugal" thanks to its dramatic setting surrounded by steep slopes and terraces.
Throughout the day, enjoy panoramic viewpoints, traditional villages, and opportunities to experience the authentic culture of Portugal's mountain communities. Depending on the season, you may encounter snow-covered landscapes, wildflowers, or golden autumn colors. Overnight in the Serra da Estrela region.
Day 3: Covilhã, Almourol Castle, and Return to Lisbon
Begin the day exploring Covilhã, a historic mountain city famous for its wool industry and unique cultural heritage. Nestled on the southern slopes of Serra da Estrela, Covilhã combines centuries of history with magnificent mountain views.
Leaving the mountains behind, travel south towards one of Portugal’s most iconic medieval landmarks: Almourol Castle. Built on a small island in the middle of the Tagus River, this fairy-tale fortress is closely linked to the Knights Templar and remains one of the most photogenic castles in the country.
After visiting Almourol, continue the journey back to Lisbon, arriving in the late afternoon.
