Begin your walk at the roundabout near Praia de Faro, known locally as the “Crab Roundabout,” meeting your naturalist guide from AquaTerra. This is a relaxed, science-led experience timed for golden hour and sunset light—ideal for calm observation, questions, and photography—without rushing the pace.
Follow an easy route of approximately 9 km on mostly dirt paths, with frequent stops for scanning, photos, and short “outdoor class” explanations. You’ll explore a variety of lagoon habitats and key viewpoints inside Ria Formosa Natural Park, focusing on how this coastal wetland works as a living system.
Visit lagoon edges and intertidal zones—areas that change dramatically with the tides—and learn how water movement shapes habitats, influences wildlife behavior, and supports local activities and industries connected to the lagoon. Along the way, interpret native vegetation adapted to salty coastal conditions: how plants survive here, their ecological roles (like stabilizing sediments and supporting biodiversity), and the links between flora, local culture, and traditional uses.
Stop at Birdwatching House 1, a lagoon-facing viewpoint with wide views toward distant sandbanks and active intertidal areas. Learn practical birdwatching techniques—how to scan, what to look for, and how to read habitat clues—while the evening light softens across the water.
Continue to Birdwatching House 2, an inland perspective with a smaller lagoon area and contrasting micro-habitats, showing how biodiversity can change over short distances and offering different birding opportunities.
Pass through saltpan landscapes connected to historic salt production, using them as a real-world example of how traditional practices and biodiversity are linked inside Ria Formosa Natural Park—a fitting way to close the walk as temperatures cool and the lagoon settles into the colors of sunset.
