What to expect
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Aït Benhaddou – Tinghir
Early in the morning, you set out from Marrakech to traverse the picturesque High Atlas Mountains across the treacherous Tizi n'Tichka Pass. Savor expansive vistas of Berber settlements situated on terraced fields and mountain slopes as you go. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aït Benhaddou, an ancient fortified village that has been used as a filming location for numerous worldwide films and is well-known for its eye-catching kasbahs. After having some free time to explore the mudbrick towers and lanes of the ksar, proceed via the Valley of Roses and through Ouarzazate, which is referred to as the gateway to the desert. Reach Tinghir, a charming village close to the breathtaking Todra Gorge and encircled by lush palm trees, in the late afternoon. Enjoy dinner, settle into your lodging, and unwind in this tranquil haven.
Day 2: Tinghir – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert (Camel Trek & Desert Camp)
Explore the Todra Gorge, a striking gorge formed by the Todra River and featuring 300-meter-tall cliffs, after breakfast. Before moving on toward the desert, take a leisurely stroll down the gorge and take in its natural splendor. Travel to Erfoud, which is well-known for its fossil workshops, before continuing on to Merzouga's golden dunes. When you arrive, exchange your car for camels and walk across the dunes as the sun sets, illuminating the desert with a plethora of vibrant hues. When you arrive at your Berber-style desert tent, mint tea will be served to you. Spend the night in a cozy tent beneath the stars, have a traditional dinner by the fire, and take in the local drumming music.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
Get up early to see the breathtaking dawn over the Sahara, when the first rays of light cause the dunes to change color. Ride camels or take a 4x4 back to meet your driver after breakfast at the camp. Start the drive back to Marrakech by following the picturesque roads that wind through the palm oases and kasbahs of the Draa Valley. Take a quick tour of the Taourirt Kasbah or just stop by Ouarzazate, sometimes referred to as the "Hollywood of Africa," for a coffee break. Your desert trip will come to an end in the evening when you reach Marrakech after continuing across the Atlas Mountains with photo stops along the way.
