The grottoes and niches of Longmen contain the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art from the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316-907). These works are entirely devoted to Buddhism and represent the pinnacle of Chinese stone carving. There are nearly 110,000 Buddha statues, more than 60 Buddhist pagodas and more than 2,800 inscriptions. The grottoes were formed in a 1km stretch of the Yi River and carved into limestone formations on both sides, forming the Longmen Grottoes. Most of the work was done on the west bank, while the caves on the east bank, which were less numerous, served as dwellings for large groups of monks.
With your guide, you'll explore most of the caves on the west bank, then walk from the caves on the east bank to Xiangshan Temple, one of the earliest of the ten temples in Longmen. Your tour will end at Bai Garden Temple, which is surrounded by dense vegetation of pine and cypress trees. At the end of the tour, you can choose to spend more time exploring the area on your own, or your guide can help you take a taxi to your next destination.
