Goto Sumio, known as one of the best contemporary painters in the Japanese art world, loved nature and used rocks to paint. He loved the natural beauty of Hokkaido and established his own studio in Kamifurano with a beautiful view of Mt. Tokachi. Since 1997, the Goto Sumio Art Museum has been known to be the home of his Hokkaido-inspired artworks.
